Executive Director at Troy Nature Society

Location: Troy, Michigan
Status: Part-Time (minimum 30 hours/week, hybrid/flexible schedule)
Salary: $50,000 – $60,000, commensurate with experience and hours

About the Troy Nature Society

The Troy Nature Society (TNS) is a small nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that manages the Stage Nature  Center, a 100-acre nature preserve located in Troy, Michigan. The center includes a vibrant interpretive  building with classrooms, small live animals, and a dedicated raptor house for rehabilitated owls. TNS is committed to inspiring the appreciation and preservation of nature through quality environmental education and programs.

Executive Director Position Overview

The Executive Director is a pivotal leadership role within the Troy Nature Society and Stage Nature Center in Troy, Michigan. This leader manages daily operations, meets goals set by the Board, and fosters a culture of collaboration, respect, and open communication. Success in fundraising and community engagement are  essential. The position represents the organization in the community and requires public speaking skills and commitment to its mission

Key Responsibilities 

Fundraising
    • Conduct successful grant research and proposal writing activities 
    • Plan and execute successful fundraising events and campaigns 
    • Direct periodic appeals to ensure continuous financial support 
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors and stakeholders 
Community Engagement and Marketing 
    • Develop and implement community outreach programs that align with the organization’s mission
    • Foster partnerships with local businesses, governments, and other organizations 
    • Enhance public relations through strategic marketing and social media efforts; oversee social media staff and  serve as the spokesperson and face of the organization 
    • Engage and mobilize community volunteers to support the organization’s activities 
Board Relations 
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the Board of Directors
    • Promote and assist with recruiting an active and committed Board of Directors
    • Provide monthly reports to the Board of Directors on current TNS activities, future activities and any problems or issues encountered
    • Submit an audited financial statement along with an annual report, based on the fiscal year’s activities, to the city and members of the Board of Directors in November of each year
    • In conjunction with the Board of Directors/Finance Committee, develop a proposed budget for the next three fiscal years by February 1st of each year
Fiscal Management 
    • Oversee the financial health of the organization by managing budgets and financial planning
    • Ensure compliance with financial policies and regulations 
    • Analyze and report financial performance to the Board of Directors 
    • Optimize resource allocation to maximize organizational efficiency 
Program Oversight 
    • Lead the development and implementation of programs that fulfill the organization’s mission
    • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, adjusting as needed 
    • Stay informed on industry trends and innovations to enhance program quality 
    • Ensure programs are inclusive and accessible to the target communities 
Facility Management 
    • Ensure that the Troy Nature Society operates in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws,  regulations, and ordinances
    • Oversee building operations, building and grounds safety, and the integrity of exhibits and interpretive displays
    • Ensure that display and care of any live animals is in accordance with state and federal laws, and humane practice
    • Oversee the creation of rotating displays relative to seasonal events and environmental topics
General Administration 
    • Manage daily operations and administrative functions to ensure smooth running of the organization
    • Supervise staff, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations 
    • Maintain and improve facilities, including trails and other physical assets 
    • Develop and enforce policies and procedures to maintain organizational standards 
    • Support all functions defined in the TNS agreement with the City of Troy

Reporting Structure

The Executive Director reports directly to the President of the Troy Nature Society Board of Directors and  ensures that the organization operates within the established guidelines and achieves its strategic goals.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field (Business, Education, Natural Resources, etc.) preferred
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in operational oversight of a nonprofit agency or equivalent  organization 
  • Proven track record in fundraising, community engagement, and program management
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills and ability to multi-task 
  • Solid computer skills include proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the organization’s database, and  other similar computer/accounting software programs. Experience with Trailblazer and QuickBooks a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong listening skills and the ability to speak publicly
  • Ability to use independent judgment and make decisions

Schedule and Compensation

This position requires a minimum of 30 hours per week, with flexible hours. Evenings and weekends may be  needed for special events. Hybrid/remote work is acceptable if organizational needs are met. The salary range is $50,000 – $60,000 based on hours and experience.
